Kinotrip’s Best of the World brings a youthfully offbeat, feistily engaged, and stylistically diverse set of films.

2123. Faced with diminishing resources, the human race can only survive through a trade-off: at the age of 50, every citizen is gradually turned into a tree. When Stefan discovers that his beloved wife Nora has voluntarily signed up for donating her own body before her time, he sets out on an adventurous journey to save her at all costs.

Linda is unfairly punished by her mother, Paulette, who will do anything to make it up to her. Even a chicken with peppers when she can’t cook. Linda absolutely wants to have the chicken that her father made that day… But there is a strike, and the shops are closed. From a henhouse to a watermelon truck, from a zealous cop to an allergic truck driver, from a grandmother to a flood, Paulette and her daughter will set off in search of the chicken, dragging along the entire “Linda gang” and ultimately the entire neighbourhood. But Linda doesn’t know that this chicken, once cooked so well by her father, is the key to her lost memory… By the way, does anyone know how to kill a chicken?

This year’s international jury includes four superstars of global auteur animation: Alexandra Ramires, a Portuguese animation poet and member of BAP Collective, Naomi van Niekerk, a South African master of storytelling using the charcoal animation technique, Nikki Schuster, an Austrian-born Berlin-based artist recycling found objects to make animated travelogues, and Dahee Jeong, a Korean animator whose poetic works have been awarded at the world’s leading festivals.

The Italian animator Gianluigi Toccafondo is the artist behind this year’s Animateka visual identity. His works are an inspired mix of painting, cinema, and animation. In his process, he makes photos from film clips, xeroxes them on paper, then paints on them, transforming the original subject. Finally, he shoots them on 35mm film, and they become cinema again.

In this evocative social drama, Komandarev aims his lens at the lives of today’s senior citizens – a vulnerable group whom politicians so often promise the right to a dignified life… but reality is much different. Karlovy Vary 2023 Best Film Award.

This film looks at the war in Ukraine from the bottom up, through the eyes of two children in search of a ray of light. Shot during the siege of Kharkiv.

Following his Absurdistan and The Bra, German director Veit Helmer returns to the Caucasus to shoot his latest feature film in the remote mountains of Georgia – a love story told without dialogue about two female cable car attendants. 

The film was shot in total secrecy, without the permission of the Iranian authorities and using non-actors. It tells the story of one night in a semi-deserted Tehran, populated by lost and suffering souls crushed by the regime that stifles the spirit of revolt. Locarno’s 2023 Golden Leopard for Best Film.

A faux found footage film that plays with the historical and science fiction genres, LOLA follows two sisters in 1941 England who invent a machine that intercepts broadcasts from the future and use it to change the course of history.

Aris is in town for a job maintaining the local antennae, which pick up fragmentary messages from people who have vanished, and Anna is hired to double as a melodica-playing man’s disappeared wife. A mysterious, surreal love story set in a retro-futurist parallel reality, saturated with the buzz of sodium streetlights, the hum of antennae, and the chirrup of insects.
