The Project of the Century La obra del siglo

Carlos M. Quintela / Cuba, Switzerland, Argentina, Germany / 2015 / 100 min

Men from the pest control department arrive to spray an apartment for dengue fever mosquitoes. Three Cuban men live here, son Leo, father Rafael and grandfather Otto, forced by circumstances to live together. The Project of the Century was shot on the fascinating location of the unfinished nuclear power station and workmen’s blocks of flats huddled around it. Interspersed with beautiful, unique archival material from Cuban television, the social-realist atmosphere gradually makes way for a surreal, at times absurd sense of oppression.

Character study of three generations of Cubans living together in a small workers’ apartment next to an unfinished nuclear power plant, the Soviet-Cuban ‘project of the century’.

"To make films in Cuba you have to go with the flow. There are problems – even basic things like power cuts and not being able to find a working printer – which you can’t fight. You have to work with the essence of things as they happen rather than worry about the finished product. Even if this means last-minute changes to the script or simplifications of the mise-en-scene." (Carlos M. Quientela)

Bong Joon Ho

Sunday, 24. 08. 2025 / 19:00 / Main Hall

Six years after Parasite, Korean director Bong Joon-ho is back with another biting satire (this time set in the distant future) with Robert Pattinson shining in the leading role(s). Its unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes, has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living. »Combining the best parts of Snowpiercer and Okja into something new, this warm and wonderful film suggests that Bong loves people even more than he hates capitalism.« – IndieWire.

Materialists Materialists

Celine Song

Monday, 25. 08. 2025 / 18:00 / Main Hall

Lucy works at a high-end matchmaking company trying to pair up moneyed entrepreneurs with elite bachelors and bachelorettes. When she meets Harry at the wedding of two of her successfully paired clients, she immediately knows that this ‘unicorn’ would be a perfect catch for a lot of her customers. But Harry is more interested in Lucy. And then her ex suddenly shows up… As we could expect from the director of Past Lives, Materialists is not exactly a romantic comedy about a matchmaker torn between two suitors, but rather a lucid examination of the contradictions of love and dating.
