Hundreds of Beavers Hundreds of Beavers

Mike Cheslik / USA / 2023 / 108 min / English

Filmed in Wisconsin and Michigan in subzero temperatures by indie film mavericks and best buddies Mike Cheslik and Ryland Brickson Cole Tews Hundreds of Beavers is a feature length live action incarnation of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Unwaveringly true to its cartoon logic from start to finish, this epic silent action comedy is endlessly inventive, inspiring, ingenious and downright insane.

In this silent supernatural epic, a drunken applejack salesman is thrust into the frigid wilderness. Can he go from zero to hero, become North America’s greatest fur trapper, and defeat hundreds of beavers?

“Steroidally swollen with gags and smarts, positively bucktoothed with goofiness, and gorgeous with world-building invention.”
– Guy Maddin

“Exists at the crossroads of Looney Tunes, Benny Hill, Cannibal: The Musical, Blazing Saddles, and Adult Swim… Hilarious!”
– Matt Donato, Slash Film

“It’s sure to develop a significant cult following with its unique mix of silent-era slapstick, animation elements, theme-park-style critter costumes, and general air of inspired absurdity.”
– Dennis Harvey, Variety

“An unexpected visionary work… Must be seen to be believed… Further proof that Wisconsin produces the strangest independent movies in the country.”
– Michael Talbot-Haynes, Film Threat

On 12 September 1919, a troop of some three hundred soldiers under the leadership of the flamboyant war-loving Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio swooped into the Northern-Adriatic port town of Fiume, now Rijeka, wanting to annex the city to Italy. Over the course of the next 16 months, during what is regarded as one of the most bizarre militant sieges of all time his official photography team captured over 10,000 images. A century later, Igor Bezinović orchestrates a direct-action history lesson focused on the siege and its modern-day implications.
