The Hill Where Lionesses Roar Luaneshat e kodrës

Luàna Bajrami / Kosovo, France / 2021 / 83 min / Albanian

The wildly poetic debut film by the emerging Kosovar director tells the story of three fearless young women on a quest for freedom.

In a remote Kosovar village, three girls on the brink of womanhood who feel their dreams have been stifled go on a quest for independence. Suffocated by the discrimination and abuse that is a constant in their village, the women decide to form a gang. Stronger together, they roam and plot revenge on those who have wronged them while creating pathways to explore their submerged desires. But their new-found freedom is not without consequence, and a hunt for the wild trio is soon underway.

“The situation in which the girls find themselves is meant to be extreme in order to challenge the viewer on what is often forgotten by adults, namely this rage that grows within us when we become aware of our condition. In each of us is a rage that has manifested itself, or it will. It will only take on different forms depending on the environment in which we are built. It is this awareness, this rage, that marks what is commonly known as the transition from childhood to adulthood.”
