Against the backdrop of Belgrade’s recent student protests, the film paints a coming-of-age portrait of resistance – blending the conventions of melodrama, comedy, crime and the road movie.

Twenty-year-old Lena is an anarchist student active in the anti-government movement. Passionate, impulsive and idealistic, she believes society can be changed, but beneath her political convictions lie family tensions and youthful insecurities. She recognises a shared restlessness in Stefan, a twenty-two-year-old working-class youth who associates with pro-government loyalists. Standing on opposite sides of the protests, they navigate an ideological and intimate conflict in a fractured society.

“Growing up in Zemun, a municipality of Belgrade, under the shadow of rigid masculine norms, I longed to escape the roles imposed on me. That discomfort, defiance and urge to run fuel this story. / … / In 2021, while mentoring a workshop, I met a girl named Lena whose presence awakened vivid memories of my own adolescence. Through her, I caught a glimpse of how my younger self might look and think today. She inspired the fictional protagonist of Until the Day Ends.” (Jelena Maksimović)
