Taking Chances Patatje Oorlog

Nicole van Kilsdonk / Netherlands, Belgium / 2011 / 86 min / Slovene subtitles, Dutch / 8+

Kiek is really worried when her dad travels to a warzone as a doctor. With profuse imagination and resourcefulness the chances of bad things happening can actually be averted.

Kiek is really scared when her dad who is a doctor goes to work abroad in troubled areas. Her imagination is fuelled by the theory of mathematic probability, which she studies at school. Is it possible to reduce the probability of an event taking place? Kiek knows children who have found a dead mouse, she has friends whose pets have died and a school mate who has lost his father. But she is not aware of all three things happening to one person. When dad is missing and leaves her without news for days, Kiek undertakes a bold venture. She might be able to help her dad, no matter how incredible her idea might sound.

“The story is about a modern little girl who needs to learn how to deal with her uncertainties and fears, but also learn how (and when) to speak her mind. Her imaginative digressions lead to crazy, funny and sometimes sad moments.” (Nicole van Kilsdonk)
