Alfie, the Little Werewolf Dolfje Weerwolfje

Joram Lürsen / Netherlands / 2011 / 95 min / Slovene subtitles, Dutch / 7+

On the night of his seventh birthday, Alfie changes into a white, furry animal: a little wolf. A kind and timid boy throughout the day, Alfie is capable of the most amazing things when night falls.

Alfie has no idea what is happening to him – by the light of the full moon, he runs through the park and the neighbours’ gardens, chasing chickens and ducks. The next morning, he wakes up as an ordinary little boy. Now he is starting to realise why he has always felt so different from his foster parents and his foster brother Timmie. He’s a werewolf. But sensitive little Alfie doesn’t want to be different. He just wants to be normal, like everybody else. He’s afraid his father and mother won’t want to have anything to do with him once they find out about his gift. So Alfie wants to keep it a secret at any cost, but that’s not easy since there’s a full moon every month.

“As a father, I have always read the books of Paul van Loon to my two daughters. In The Netherlands, the character of Alfie the Little Werewolf is widely known and loved. He appeals to the imagination of very young children. The stories Paul van Loon tells are exciting – Alfie has a unique gift and has endearing little adventures. Great themes like ‘being different’, ‘the fear of not belonging’, ‘accepting who you are’, ‘brotherly love’ and ‘revenge’ give different layers to this beautiful story.” (Joram Lürsen)
