The Word Slovo

Beata Parkanová / Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland / 2022 / 104 min / Czech

The masterfully told drama provides a vivid portrait of ordinary people. Its protagonists – inspired by Czech director Beata Parkanová’s forebears – undergo a difficult ordeal in the summer of 1968.

A story about Václav, a respected notary and small-town authority, and his self-sacrificing spouse Věra. While the husband and wife differ in temperament, intellect and emotionality, in their disposition they share not only a serene, pure form of love, but also mutual respect and admirable ethical principles. Their life goes through an important plot development; from the occupation in 1968, Václav's nervous breakdown and stay in a psychiatric hospital, Věra's caring for him and the family at this time, the repeated refusal to join the Communist Party, which results in the emigration of the spouses to the countryside. The ebbs and flows of life underscore the importance of personal and social freedom, as well as the couple’s unwavering marital relationship.

"I wanted to write a story of two equally strong characters because I think that is where real drama is born. I was lucky enough to experience the relationship between my grandmother and grandfather, who were partners like this as well. They weren’t friends, they were not tolerant, they didn’t necessarily always know how to get along, but they were equal partners, and I think that this kept their relationship alive, real and intense their whole life." (Beata Parkanová)
