Beautiful Beings Berdreymi

Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson / Iceland, Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Czech Republic / 2022 / 123 min / Icelandic

The director of Heartstone, winner of the Ljubljana Film Festival’s Audience Award, returns with yet another tale of teen violence – employing magic realism to paint a portrait of boyhood, brutality and loyalty.

Addi, a boy raised by a clairvoyant mother, decides to adopt Balli, a bullied misfit into his gang of outsiders. Addi, Konni and Siggi explore aggression and violence but also learn about loyalty and love. The three friends start spending more and more time in Balli's unhappy home. They ridicule him constantly, but also act as his protectors. As the group’s behaviour escalates towards life-threatening situations, Addi begins to experience dreamlike visions. Will the friends’ relentless tendency towards competitiveness and self-affirmation push them over the edge?

“When I write and direct, I’m always inspired by my own experience and surroundings, but it’s a fictional story. That said, when I was younger, I was in a group of boys, and we did use violence, domination as part of our communication. Most of the time, it was done for fun, to get close to each other. On a wider perspective, Icelandic society [in the early 1990s] had real issues with youth violence and substance abuse. I was surprised while researching for this film, that this toxic masculinity and violence among youngsters is still going on, although it has been reduced drastically.”
