Silent Roar Silent Roar

Johnny Barrington / United Kingdom / 2023 / 90 min / English

This waggishly wacky film, shot in a mystic landscape of a Scottish island and with all the hues of a wavy ocean, is an unusual story about Dondo, a young surfer who is still longing for his missing father.

Dondo is a young surfer whose favourite way of spending his time is riding the ocean waves. But the sea is not only positive! In the waves of a choppy ocean, Dondo’s father has mysteriously disappeared and Dondo is still searching for him with all his might. The arrival of an unusual priest arouses in him an interest in religion. With it, he tries to make sense of his father’s disappearance, humorously interpreting the doctrine in his own way. His weird mission attracts the attention of his rebellious schoolmate Sas. Their friendship and youthful restlessness push them onto a mystic path through the waves, the fickle Scottish weather and hellish fire.

Let film take you on a spiritual merry-go-round!

»Another origin was a surf trip to Machrihanish on the West coast of Scotland, where the light was surreal, and I realised how some activities are great at making you stop thinking about anything, other than the job at hand. I realised how important it is to do something that shuts up the brain chat and puts you in a flow state. Surfing is the best activity I’ve found for doing that.«

Fiume o morte! Fiume o morte!

On 12 September 1919, a troop of some three hundred soldiers under the leadership of the flamboyant war-loving Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio swooped into the Northern-Adriatic port town of Fiume, now Rijeka, wanting to annex the city to Italy. Over the course of the next 16 months, during what is regarded as one of the most bizarre militant sieges of all time his official photography team captured over 10,000 images. A century later, Igor Bezinović orchestrates a direct-action history lesson focused on the siege and its modern-day implications.
