IMDb

On 20th December 1989, Romania stands on the brink of revolution. The streets are alive with demonstrations, students mock the regime through art, and New Year’s shows glorify Ceausescu. Yet, in the discomfort of their unheated homes, families grapple with personal conflicts and the omnipresent Secret Police. Six lives intersect in unexpected ways. An aspiring actress asked to perform in a propaganda-heavy TV special, two boys who are ready to flee, a woman whose entire life is literally about to collapse and a little boy who's just sent a letter to Father Christmas. As tensions reach boiling point, an explosive moment unites them, culminating in the dramatic fall of Ceausescu and the communist regime.

"I have always been interested in the concept of now, particularly when it pertains to a historical now – a single moment in time that connects everyone to a shared consciousness. Some of these moments are pivotal shifts in historical paradigms, such as the Romanian Revolution, which is likely the most televised revolution in the world, if not the first. However, I wanted to approach this subject from the microscopic perspective of ordinary people, rather than from a top-down view. My aim was to recreate that moment in time when change occurred without being immediately noticed /.../." (Bogdan Muresanu)

Sunday, 24. 08. 2025 / 19:00 / Main Hall

Six years after Parasite, Korean director Bong Joon-ho is back with another biting satire (this time set in the distant future) with Robert Pattinson shining in the leading role(s). Its unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes, has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living. »Combining the best parts of Snowpiercer and Okja into something new, this warm and wonderful film suggests that Bong loves people even more than he hates capitalism.« – IndieWire.

Lucy works at a high-end matchmaking company trying to pair up moneyed entrepreneurs with elite bachelors and bachelorettes. When she meets Harry at the wedding of two of her successfully paired clients, she immediately knows that this ‘unicorn’ would be a perfect catch for a lot of her customers. But Harry is more interested in Lucy. And then her ex suddenly shows up… As we could expect from the director of Past Lives, Materialists is not exactly a romantic comedy about a matchmaker torn between two suitors, but rather a lucid examination of the contradictions of love and dating.
