10 YEARS ANIMATION CLASH
Animation Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Selected films made by students and alumni in 2007-2016

After two animation workshops in the graphics masterclass run by Gunter Damisch at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna I started my first regular animation seminar in winter 2006. Since then the animation studio has been growing year by year, since an increasing number of students were interested in the art of animation. For five years now, the studio has had its own space and is quite well equipped for “analogue animation”. Students come from a wide range of academic backgrounds, such as graphics, painting, photography, sculpture, video art, performance, etc., therefore the works they produce in the animation workshop vary quite significantly, each one having a strong individual mark. Come and see a nice selection of animated films made by animation students in Vienna over the last 10 years.

Mag. Thomas Renoldner
Senior Lecturer
Head of Animation Lab at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Autosafari
Markus Dressler
Avstrija/Austria, 2007, digital, 9’00”

A road-movie and psychedelic journey leading along sequential snippets, through an in-between world where the reality and fiction merge. It is an autobiographical memory, dream and fantasy that ends abruptly in the Academy of Fine Arts auditorium, which has turned into a steaming jungle populated by giant cats.

Guitar String Marked Fingerprints
Dust Covered Carpet
Avstrija/Austria, 2010, digital, 3’19”

Music video for the Austrian band Dust Covered Carpet. Fabulous creatures are having a hard time to survive in a more and more poisoned world.

Never Starting Story
Anastasiya Yarovenko
Avstrija/Austria, 2010, digital, 1’15”

The chicken or the egg – this logical paradox has no start and thus no end.
Never Starting Story is an attempt to solve this causality dilemma and answer a metaphysical question about the first chicken or egg, at the same time evoking the questions of how life and the universe in general evolve.

Tinamv1
Adnan Popović
Avstrija/Austria, 2011, digital, 4’15”

Music video for the Viennese electronic duo KILO. The individual samples of the music are embodied by objects, paintings and drawings, which move according to the different rhythms.

The Way To M
Zsuzsanna Werner
Avstrija/Austria, 2011, digital, 7’20”

A postmodern road movie. A digital worker is sitting and working in a post-modern skyscraper in the city. An everyday incident with his boss triggers a spiritual journey in him. In his visions he meets M. M., the universal muse.

M-jeva smrt / Der Tod Des M / The Death of M
Klemens Waldhuber
Avstrija/Austria, 2012, digital, 3’40”

Based on historical facts about the assassination of French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat in 1793, two pieces of soap restage this event in a soap dish and create a new and more “theatrical” ending.

The River
David Kellner
Avstrija/Austria, 2013, digital, 6’

The River is a silent movie about a man who finishes his work on his book of life and then heads out towards utilisation.

Groteskno žvrgolenje / Groteskes Gezwitscher / Grotesque Chirp
Mariela Schöffmann
Avstrija/Austria, 2013, digital, 3’31”

A wing, an area and dissolved borders to the reality are waiting for the end of the night. In order to be able to come back again in the quiet daylight to the dreamless peace.

Nočna izmena / Nachtschicht / Night Shift
Kathrin Pordzik
Avstrija/Austria, 2013, digital, 3’03”

The viewer gets to see a nurse's typical long night shift in a hospital. The tone of the film is rather sombre.

365
Lorenz Friedrich
Avstrija/Austria, 2014, digital, 1’

Within one year 365 wooden miniatures were carved. 8 December 2010 – 7 December 2011. A short story but a long run.

Obred barve / El Ritual Del Color / The Ritual of Color
Maria Luz Olivares Capelle
Avstrija/Austria, 2015, digital, 5’

The Ritual of Color is a timeless cinematic magic act, a brief essay about the illusion of colour in film. It is an experimental gag based on a combination of hand developed reverse film material and digital animation.

Voller Kanton
Patrick Schabus
Avstrija/Austria, 2015, digital, 4’43”

A music video for the Wladiferoff Brothers, combining rotoscoped dancers and live action film. The drawings of the dancers were developed in cooperation with the filmmaker’s 7-year-old daughter. The live action scenes are inspired by black&white jazz movies of the 1930s.

Birmingham
Gudrun Fürlinger
Avstrija/Austria, 2016, digital, 4’18”

A music video for the song Birmingham by the Viennese band Starpilots. Animated ink drawings are inspired by movie-stills, which are also part of the animation. The animated sequence is blending in a live action one with faded drawings and stills.

Bong Joon Ho

Sunday, 24. 08. 2025 / 19:00 / Main Hall

Six years after Parasite, Korean director Bong Joon-ho is back with another biting satire (this time set in the distant future) with Robert Pattinson shining in the leading role(s). Its unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes, has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living. »Combining the best parts of Snowpiercer and Okja into something new, this warm and wonderful film suggests that Bong loves people even more than he hates capitalism.« – IndieWire.

Materialists Materialists

Celine Song

Monday, 25. 08. 2025 / 18:00 / Main Hall

Lucy works at a high-end matchmaking company trying to pair up moneyed entrepreneurs with elite bachelors and bachelorettes. When she meets Harry at the wedding of two of her successfully paired clients, she immediately knows that this ‘unicorn’ would be a perfect catch for a lot of her customers. But Harry is more interested in Lucy. And then her ex suddenly shows up… As we could expect from the director of Past Lives, Materialists is not exactly a romantic comedy about a matchmaker torn between two suitors, but rather a lucid examination of the contradictions of love and dating.
