The last years of the Cultural Revolution. A political prisoner escapes a labour camp and goes to the village cinema to watch a newsreel in which his daughter appears for a second. But the crucial film roll is stolen in front of his eyes by a homeless girl... The most visible representative of the China’s Fifth Generation filmmakers, Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern), celebrates the power of film and cinema in one of his best works of the last decades.
