From September 22 to 26
Migrant Film Festival, organized by Slovenska filantropija for the sixteenth consecutive year, will once again bring screenings and accompanying events to Ljubljana and several other locations, highlighting various topics and aspects of contemporary migration, asylum, and refugee life. This year, we will touch on current stories related to identity and the feeling of (not) belonging, women in migration, the exploitation of migrant workers, forced returns, and genocide in Palestine.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldovan women left in droves for work in Western Europe, leaving their children to be cared for by their relatives. They sent money and other goods home, and in return, their children sent videotaped messages. These intimate recordings testify to the painful void left in the lives of children by mothers forced to leave their homeland to provide a better life for their families.

The film takes us to fields across Europe growing our fruit and vegetables. Seydou, from Mali, picks oranges in southern Italy. He has no contract and is paid by the crate, living in a hut he built himself in a settlement without water or electricity… Blueberries in Portugal, olives in Greece, strawberries in Spain—over two million migrant workers labour across Europe’s fields, most without contracts and earning minimum wage, some undocumented and deep in debt with agents.
