The Basics of Killing Družinica

Jan Cvitkovič / Slovenia / 2017 / 95 min / Slovene

In a country in which social help depends on income from two years ago, the boundary between a normal family life and naked poverty is very thin. Druznica, directed by Jan Cvitkovic (Blood and Milk, Gravehopping) reflects the experiences of many families across Slovenia.

The Gradniks are a happy family. Marko is a beloved philosophy teacher in middle school, and Dunja is a successful director of development in a factory. Their son, twelve year old Taras, is a promising judo enthusiast, and his eight year old sister Mala is a lively young girl. Their lives are beautiful and peaceful, until both parents unexpectedly lose their jobs, suddenly overturning their idyllic family life. As Marko and Dunja struggle under increasing pressure, their children begin to increasingly shoulder the burden.
