Andrzej Wajda / Poland / 2016 / 98 min / Polish

Polish with Slovene subtitles

The story of avant-garde artist Władysława Strzemińskega who in post-war Poland refused to compromise his art in the face of pressures from the communist regime, and rejected its demand that artists create in the language of socialist realism.

The last film from the late Polish master of cinematography Andrzej Wajda is a many faceted intellectual agitprop about the role of art and the meaning of the freedom of expression. A film about a charismatic, rebellious man destroyed by a totalitarian regime. Polish candidate for Best Foreign Language film at the 2016 Academy Awards.

Lucy works at a high-end matchmaking company trying to pair up moneyed entrepreneurs with elite bachelors and bachelorettes. When she meets Harry at the wedding of two of her successfully paired clients, she immediately knows that this ‘unicorn’ would be a perfect catch for a lot of her customers. But Harry is more interested in Lucy. And then her ex suddenly shows up… As we could expect from the director of Past Lives, Materialists is not exactly a romantic comedy about a matchmaker torn between two suitors, but rather a lucid examination of the contradictions of love and dating.
