After happily frolicking on the beach with male classmates in a small Turkish village, five teenage sisters face the oppressive sanctions of their conservative family. A beautiful tale of sisterhood from Turkish-French Director Deniz Gamze Ergüven.

It’s the beginning of summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters return home from school, innocently playing with a group of boys. The supposed debauchery of their games causes a scandal with unforeseen consequences. The family home progressively transforms into a prison, practical household chores replace school work and marriages start being arranged. The five sisters, driven by the same desire for freedom, twist the boundaries imposed upon them.

"One of the things that bothers me most in Turkey is the constant and hideous sexualisation of women. And I know this starts at a very young age – girls are treated this way when they are only children, before they even become women. Like the character of Lale in the movie, I was the youngest of all my sisters, so I became aware of these matters when I was a little girl."

Sex, Love and Dreams—not necessarily in that order—are the chapters in a loosely connected trilogy set in contemporary Oslo. In Sex, an intimate conversation between two men sparks a witty and refreshingly honest reflection on sexuality and gender roles in our society.
