Continuing this celebration of cinema and cinemas, the capital each year offers its citizens and visitors free screenings of timeless film classics, marking significant anniversaries and events in cinema history and the city of Ljubljana.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the Open-air Cinema Congress Square opened with the digital restoration of <strong>Wings of Desire<\/strong>, the hypnotic city symphony which earned Wim Wenders Best Director honours at Cannes in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>Akira Kurosawa&#8217;s seminal classic <strong>Rashomon<\/strong>, which won the Golden Lion at Venice and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1951, was part of the project <strong>Japan in Our Midst \u2013 JAPOM \/ The Spirit of the Samurai<\/strong>, and screened in tribute to the great Japanese actor Toshir\u00f4 Mifune (1920\u20131997).
